for everyone

These past few weeks, I've been thinking of getting an external hard disk so I can do a backup of the data stored in my iBook's hard disk.  My current iBook, a G3 800 (Dual USB) is slowly getting cluttered, primarily with around 10 GB of audio files which is synchronized with my iPod.

Then I chanced upon the sale of pre-owned Macs at ynzal.com courtesy of a post at http://www.philmug.ph and jayvee's journal.  When I saw that they are offering a tangerine iBook with 30 GB hard drive, I quickly called Ynzal and asked about the unit.  The unit had a hairline crack at its bezel but when I started testing it, it seems all fine.  So I paid for the unit and gone home happy.

Now I have a way of backing up my data (once I get my hands on either a USB-to-USB cable or a crossed LAN cable.  A big bonus on this is my kid (the Geek-in-training on the front page) will no longer bug me whenever he wants to play with his computer games!

nothing's an impulsive buy as long as it's a Mac :)

Well, hopefully, I won't have a buyers' remorse on this one. Actually, I can't wait to get home so I can start working with this new baby. I already have a cross-cable with me so I can connect this with my other, newer iBook. I'm planning to re-install OSX & MacOS 9 on this and then replicate my iTunes library and iPhoto library to make it a veritable backup of my iBook 800.

Now, if only I can remember the hotkey to put the Mac into "Host Mode"... =)

@Jayvee: I think this will be an ideal machine for the "older" people since its resolution is at 640 x 480 -- giving them larger letters and making it "friendlier" to the eyes.

sharon also wants to buy one of the 10k macs. pwede na yun. can we accompany her daw? shes in training now kasi.

target disk mode is done by pressing "T" after a reboot :)

Jayvee is correct but if that does not work and you do manage to install Tiger, meron ding Target Disk Mode option from the Startup Disk preferences.

Thanks for the tips Mr. Beanster and Carlowww...

I was able to make the two macs talk with each other using my handy dandy cross cable. Initially, I had trouble making them communicate via TCP/IP. Since both of them are Epol computers, I decided to use the EpolTok protocol (sige na nga, AppleTalk) so instead of sharing the disk via SMB, I did it via AFP. Slick di ba???? Using this method, I was able to backup my files from my chiclet iBook effortlessly.

The Tangerine bool (which I fondly refer to as "Clam") had some sort of bonus for me.... it still had MS Office (as if I'm gonna use it), Photoshop CS, FlashMX, Freehand, and DreamWeaver. But still, I intend to reformat it *after* I'm done cleaning up my Chiclet iBook.
